In
Iowa Galen had the opportunity to ride
a
combine for harvesting corn.
What
a contrast to what we see in Guatemala.
Corn
harvested on large flat fields.
A
huge machine required little time to harvest corn.
The
combine is computer controlled and can even
be guided by GPS.
The
corn is easily carried away in huge wagons.
Iowa
suffered from a drought which greatly
reduced the corn yield this year.
The
corn stands taller in Guatemala in comparison
to
what we saw in Iowa.
Corn
growing on the hillsides
Unharvested
corn stands on the upper right corner of the field.
The
manner of transportation of hand-picked corn
from
the field in Guatemala
Men
carry their loads long distances from the fields to their homes. The
loads may weigh up to 200 pounds!
A
truck loaded with bags of corn to be transported to town.
We
learned that the price of corn has gone up significantly here
in
Guatemala affecting the poor who need
to buy corn for their daily tortillas.
